When Homemaking Becomes Your Ministry

A Homemaker is more than just a housekeeper. Homemaking is a beautiful ministry.

How do I know this?

Because at one point in my life I have been both. I used to clean houses for a living and I really enjoyed doing it.

It was a business that I had built up and I had created a great relationship with my clients. I loved to make their house sparkle and shine and pamper with “the little extras” that I would do.

Receiving texts from overwhelmed moms who had just gotten home from a long day at work, with kids hanging from her legs, saying how amazing her house looked was music to my ears.

While being a housekeeper, I would pray for my sweet clients. I would ask God to help them prosper and bring blessings into their home. I viewed it as a ministry in a way.

Being a Homemaker is more than being a Housekeeper

But being a homemaker is more than picking up strewn toys, mopping floors and scrubbing toilets.

A homemaker is defined as a person who manages the home. Think about this with me…If you are a homemaker, you are a manager of the MOST important place in your domain.

You are the one who makes sure that everyone is fed, bathed, clothed in clean clothes. You make sure the home is running smoothly.

But how is this a ministry? And how can you create your homemaking ministry?

Isaiah 32:18 “Then my people will live in a peaceful habitation, And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places.”

Your ministry as a homemaker is to create a beautiful resting place for your family.

It is praying over your home throughout the day as you go about your daily activities. It is guiding your children in the right direction through your actions in your home. Using this as a ministry means allowing God to help you manage the home that He has given you.

The Ministry of Homemaking

As I go through my home each day and make the beds, pick up toys, fold laundry and wash dishes, I take the time to thank God for allowing me the opportunity to be a homemaker and allowing it to be my ministry.

Even on the difficult days, I stop and ask for strength and guidance on how I am to create an atmosphere that God wants in our home. And as I’m sure you know, some days are just plain hard.

Some days are chaotic, stressful, and overwhelming. But this happens in any ministry and in any persons life who is being used by God to fulfill a purpose.

I adore it when my husband walks in from a long day at work into a home that has been prepared for him to have peace.

The house will be warm and cozy, a nicely scented candle is burning, the home is freshly picked up, the home is visually pleasing, and he is welcomed with a hug and a smile. Our son runs to him every day ready for a huge hug. This is a ministry. This is your ministry!

Now, there are days when it is not like this. There are days when laundry is piled up, the dog and child have been running in and out of the house all day causing the floors to be a mess, and there may be dishes in the sink awaiting their turn in the dishwasher.

This is also a homemaking ministry.

Yes! Our home still has a peaceful atmosphere and I have still managed my home, but this also means that I have put my full time and attention on my son. The son that I am trying to teach academically and spiritually.

The son whom I prayed 8 years for and has my full devoted attention. I have chosen to stop doing laundry and dishes for a moment when he says “Mommy will you play with me?”. This is most definitely a ministry.

Evolving in the Homemaking Ministry

Just like any other ministry, we grow and evolve.

If you are struggling as a homemaker, ask the Lord to help you turn this into a ministry. I haven’t always been the best at some of the things I do now…I still can’t cook well. My husband is definitely better at that than I am and he cooks most of the time. *Can all the women say “Amen”?*

But I’ve created a special haven. A place where my family wants to be. And I have prayed to be able to do this. I’ve prayed or the guidance and direction to know how to tend to my family and home for whatever needs that come along.

As you grow and evolve as a homemaker, you will come to love and appreciate cleaning, cooking, tending to the kids, and even scrubbing the toilets.

There are many times as I go throughout my day that I just breathe a sigh of thankfulness and I know that this is what I’m supposed to be doing. This is my specific ministry. And I want that for you.

Proverbs 3:33 “…but He blesses the dwelling of the righteous.”

I know God will bless you in your efforts. He will give you joy as a homemaker. He will allow you to have peace as a homemaker.

Let this be your ministry as you graciously serve your family. And remember that “whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord”.
